Costa Rica: 100% of consumed energy should be clean

By A.Verdin from EnergyDigital.com, 18 May 2010

Costa Ricas new president has taken a stand for renewable energy, and has stated that she wants 100 percent of the country’s consumable energy to come from renewable energy sources.

It was reported in recent news articles that Laura Chinchilla, the newly inaugurated Costa Rican president, wants to develop a dynamic cluster of clean energy and power sources.

According to Chinchillas statement at the European Union, Latin American and Caribbean Business Summit (Cumbre Empresarial Unión Europea-America Latina y Caribe), this would allow Costa Rica to become the first country in the world to be able to produce the energy it consumes from 100 percent renewable resources.

President Chinchilla invited Spanish and European companies interested in renewable energy to take part in this transformation. Spain, which has several international corporate businesses in renewable energy, such as Iberdrola Renovables and Gamesa, is already president in the American continent, though it is primarily focused in the United States and Mexico.

In addition to her announcement to include greener energy practices in the country, Chinchilla expressed a full commitment to close the Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union.

Being able to close this partnership agreement would allow the region to have privileged access to two major markets in the world, as well as the United States, Europe and China, said Chinchilla.

Talks between the European Union and Panama, Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua were suspended on May 7 after the party took several strides forward in issues such as the import of dairy products.
